Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Barker

🌾 John Dunn

John Dunn helped turn Mount Barker’s wheat into a business with customers far beyond the Adelaide Hills. An experienced English miller, he migrated to South Australia in 1840 and established his Mount Barker steam mill in 1844. The enterprise encouraged local grain growing and developed into a milling company with overseas markets. Success also made Dunn a substantial benefactor: his support for the town included its Methodist church, charitable housing and recreation ground. He served in both houses of the South Australian parliament. The surviving mill buildings and Dunn Memorial Church give his story a particularly tangible setting: flour, politics and philanthropy all left their mark on the same town.

📰 Charles Dumas

Charles Morris Russell Dumas launched the Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser in October 1880. The title was almost a small article in itself, but the purpose was clear: country communities deserved a strong voice of their own. Dumas had grown up in Mount Barker before training as a printer in Adelaide. His newspaper prospered sufficiently for him to build a dedicated office and printery in Gawler Street in 1884. He ran the business for more than half a century and represented Mount Barker in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1898 to 1902. Those newspapers also became a rich record of the district’s everyday life.

📚 Garth Boomer

Garth Boomer was born at Mount Barker in 1940 and attended Littlehampton Primary and Mount Barker High before further schooling in Adelaide. His ideas put learning in a partnership between teachers and students, allowing pupils some choice and encouraging teachers to investigate their own classroom practice. He combined administrative responsibility with an energetic writing and speaking career in English and literacy. He also contributed to the creation of the children’s television programme Lift Off. For Boomer, educational reform could involve policy papers and classroom research, but imagination had a place on the screen as well.

🎨 Dora Chapman

Dora Chapman was born at Mount Barker in 1911, attended its primary and high schools, and established a studio there by 1938. Her early portraits won prizes, including a painting of fellow artist John Dowie. Teaching and arts administration accompanied work that moved between realism, abstraction and expressionism. After retiring from teaching in 1969 she explored silkscreen printmaking while also caring for her husband, artist James Cant. Later exhibitions renewed attention to her own achievement. She used Cant as her married surname but continued exhibiting as Chapman, keeping a distinct artistic name within a shared creative life.
